Rivian's Yakima truck tent hands-on review: comfortable camping

You are taking your new Rivian R1T electric pickup truck to the big green area over there, right? What we mean is that this is not to say that your new electric pickup truck can’t handle a bit of dirt; our 43-day, 7,686-mile off-road trip at the helm of Rivian should be enough to clear the wild Pan-American Trail (TAT). Any concerns about charging or capacity. This is a big world, you all go out and explore.

Day trips and the nature-facing AirBnb are great, but we recommend that you set up a nest with your new Rivian at a local or remote campsite. After all, R1T has to offer a lot in terms of wilderness facilities, especially when you choose how to spend the quiet time of the night. Rivian has solved it for you-literally. After the rain, the new Rivian brand Yakima roof/bed top tent ($2,650) is a great place to stretch out under the stars. This is a pop-up shelter that we often use during our weeks of TAT trips. The joint tent is a port of Yakima’s existing Skyrise HD medium-sized roof tent, modified and installed on a set of Rivian crossbars that span the width of the truck.

The pair of structural rods are locked into the R1T's integrated accessory port located on the top of the bed wall or roof, depending on where you want to fasten things or set up a tent. Need more bed space, or just don't like driving around with scaffolding hanging on the sledge? Use a special key tool to open the pole, and then throw these suction cups into the onboard gear tunnel or bed.

Therefore, no matter where the crossbar fits, the Yakima tent is also there. Once in place, you can create a base camp, and the final product comes with a drop-down ladder and rain flies. Even when stored, it's not the size of a matchbox, but its 49 x 58 x 17 inch size means it's hardly like carrying a full-size barn on your tailgate.

When opened, it is a spacious 56 x 96 x 48 inches, providing enough indoor space to accommodate up to three people. Yes, we think there are two people who have more comfortable gear settings, but as long as you keep the total internal weight at a maximum of less than 600 pounds, you can do it. Either way, you will at least use a 2.5-inch thick wall to feel comfortable with the integrated foam cushion on the wall. Sleepers can choose a complete set of cushions, or simply lie in a sleeping bag of your choice as we do.

How easy is it to set up?

Popping up this recharge is easy. As mentioned earlier, you must first unfasten several zippers and snaps on the weatherproof cover. After removing the vinyl cover, unfold the second installed tarp and unfold the entire tent like a reverse sandwich. When you do this, the internal structure will pop up to full height and you are almost ready to go.

Next, pick up a bag of soft rods that came with the kit. These are used for rain/sun canopies located on the upper part of the tent, each pole is inserted into a small loop point and bent under tension to form an awning. Hot night? The rain fly is detachable to increase airflow, but even if it is in place, you can open a skylight to watch the stars.

Of course, demolishing it is just the opposite of this process, and it is estimated that it will take three to five minutes to build and demolish the tent. Look? There is no reason not to go out and bask in the sun, beat spiders, throw cotton candy into the fire, and enjoy the beautiful terrain our country offers.
