TO THE EDITOR: The Board of Adjustment hearing that approved a five-year extension for the Washington House restaurant tent is a classic example of the Bernards Township planning process again failing the township's residents.
The tent was put up to be permanent from the beginning. The Washington House counted on the township being too weak to raise real concerns.
They agreed to only a five-year extension knowing full well that when they ask to make it permanent in five years - or less - it will be granted, as they can cite the five years or operation.
The Board of Adjustment had no legitimate reason to grant the extension. They just were too weak to say no.
Counting parking they do not own and arguing it is adequate? Why don't you or I try to get away with a similar argument some time?
This is typical of the Bernards Township planning process, where small business owners and homeowners are held to the exact letter of the codes, but larger, more prominent groups can do whatever they want.
The township is overdeveloped. Our roads are overcrowded. Developers and larger groups get what they want, and the residents pay for it.
I call on the Township Committee for once to do their job and overturn this ridiculous extension. They, of course, will never put their residents first and so will do nothing.
So join with me and vote them all out if they don't.
