MATTAPOISETT — Select board members raised concerns Tuesday that a tent approved only for Harbor Days use is being offered for public events outside the scope of their previous approval.

The Mattapoisett Lions Club was granted permission to place the tent on July 6, ahead of the Harbor Days, the traditional town celebration scheduled July 16 and 17.

But select board members questioned why this tent is now being offered for public use, based on a Facebook post on the Lions Club site.

“Perhaps you have a wedding or an idea to host an activity or fundraising event this summer? If so, this would be a fantastic space complete with summer breezes and a million dollar view,” the post reads, urging those interested to contact Valerie Kane, President of the Lions Club.

The tent is available for public use July 8 and 9, the Facebook post reads. It is already reserved for July 12, but the post does not state what the tent is being used for on that date.

The Facebook post, which was still online as of Wednesday, May 25, states that the Harbor Days tent will be put up at Shipyard Park on Wednesday, July 6, and lists dates that the tent is available to use.

No representative from the Lions Club was present at the meeting to comment.

“I have an issue with this because the board authorizes each activity that occurs in Shipyard Park, and anything that falls outside that while the tent is there needs to go before the Select Board for authorization,” said Select Board chair Jordan Collyer.

Collyer theorized that this might have been done to “help alleviate cost of the tent,” but specified that the Facebook post did not say anything about renting or the exchange of money.

He mentioned that there were already events authorized by the town on some of the nights listed on the post, which would create schedule conflicts.

One of those conflicts affected the Taste of the Town, hosted by the Mattapoisett Woman’s Club.

Historically, the club has used the tent on the Tuesday before Harbor Days to host the Taste of the Town event, which raises money for local scholarships.

Woman’s Club President Sandra Hering said they were told by the Lions Club that they could choose any other date, because that Tuesday was “already booked.” She said this made for a “tight” situation, as they had already reached out to restaurants.

“It’s getting difficult to hold this event,” Hering said.

Select Board member Tyler Macallister said the Board had already approved the use of Shipyard Park for Taste of the Town as part of the list of annual events.

Collyer stated that when the board gives authorization for an event, then “they won’t be double-booked and if someone else is there [they] can say [they] have written authorization and can notify the police.”

A motion to reaffirm the use of Shipyard Park for the Taste of the Town on Tuesday, July 12 passed unanimously.

“Shipyard Park is there for the town, it’s not there for any specific organization to monopolize or capitalize their time while they’re there,” said Collyer.

“The neighbors don’t mind Harbor Days, but when it starts going into ‘Harbor Weeks,’ they have a problem,” said Select Board Member Jodi Bauer.
